Shillong, Apr 3: Meghalaya Chief Secretary on Friday held a meeting with the members of the Medical Expert Committee constituted by the State Government about the use of masks as a necessary preventive measure to fight COVID-19 Pandemic.
In the meeting, the members deliberated upon the WHO recommendation on the effectiveness of use of Masks and emphasized that it can be effective only when followed along with hand hygiene using hand sanitizers, soap and social distancing.
It was revealed that the State Government has entrusted the Department of Commerce and Industries to produce double-layered reusable cotton masks locally with the help of SHGs and NGOs.
The chief secretary informed that all tailoring units under the department have been mobilised to produce 3 lakh masks by 10th April, and that orders have been placed to procure 10 lakh masks within a 10-day period from outside the state.
Furthermore, the committee also advised general public to stitch their own cotton masks at home. The manual for the same is available on www.psa.gov.in and the Ministry of Health and Family Website.
