Meghalaya DIPR files FIR against ‘fake news’ propagators

Shillong, June 11: The Director of Information and Public Relations, B S Sohliya on Thursday filed two first information reports to the Officer in charge, Cyber Crime PS, Meghalaya against fake news propagators on social media. 

An FIR was filed against a Facebook page called ‘Lakewoods Eco Camp’ for allegedly uploading two fake news regarding containment zones in Meghalaya.

‘These two post state that “one small locality in Nongmynsong is containment zone public needs details? Transparency please…” and “two containment zones already Umsamlem Nongmynsong for contact tracing procedures public demands transparency now??,’ Sohliya stated in the FIR. 

Another FIR was also filed against unknown persons for “propagating fake news through WhatsApp and other social media platforms.”

According to the FIR, fake news regarding officials from the secretariat and NIC were spread on social media. 

‘These fake news state that “some officials from Secretariat and NIC have been tested positive for COVID-19.” and “in Nongmynsong 4 (four) people have tested positive including one who work in the wine store at Demseiniong petrol pump. There are others and spread through social contact is possible. Be careful, dont associate with friends who have returned from anywhere,’ the FIR read. 

Earlier the Chief Minister tweeted, “Request our citizens to refrain from circulating/forwarding unverified information and create panic. Have instructed our officials in the meeting today to take stringent action against such individuals. Let’s avoid spreading #FakeNews.”
