Meghalaya High Court: Pyndapborthiaw Saibon is KHNAM’s president

SHILLONG, Mar 25: The Meghalaya High Court recently upheld Pyndapborthiaw Saibon as the president of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM).

In its March 20 order the Meghalaya High Court stated that the position held by petitioner no 2 (Saibon) shall be maintained.

The High Court also stated that Saibon shall be at liberty to act as the president of the KHNAM till the next hearing.

It may be mentioned that internal bickering in the KHNAM, on who represents the party has been going for the last few months.

One faction is being led by the its lone MLA, from North Shillong – Adelbert Nongrum and the other by Saibon.

Saibon has accused, Nongrum of misleading the Election Commission of India by claiming that he was duly elected as the president of the party.

The development is a big blow to Nongrum and his supporters who had been fighting with the rival faction for a hold in the party.

The faction led by Nongrum had set up THS Bonney as their candidate from the Shillong Parliamentary seat.

On the fate of Bonney’s as KHNAM candidate, Saibon said that ‘form A and form B’ with which party ticket has been allotted to Bonney have become null and void with the passing of this order by the court.

“We have also forwarded the court’s order to the chief electoral officer (CEO) for necessary action on the matter. We will be compelled to file a contempt case against the CEO or Returning Officer (RO) if they go against an order passed by the court,” Saibon said.

Nomination papers will be taken up for scrutiny on Tuesday.

It may be mentioned that in early this year before the MDC elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had urged both the factions to settle the issue amicably.

ECI under secretary, Kaptan Chand had stated, “…it seems there is an internal dispute in the party regarding office bearers. You are therefore advised to resolve internal dispute within the party either amicably or else by orders of a competent court.”

“We could not settle the matter amicably. Therefore we had to go to Court,” Saibon added.
