Meghalaya lacks in term of trade with Bangladesh

SHILLONG, Nov 14: Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma on Thursday said that Tripura has advanced more than Meghalaya in term of doing trade with its neighbour Bangladesh.

“Tripura has really advanced; they have connections with the traders in Bangladesh,” the Chief Minister told reporters.

Giving example, Conrad said that the products which are in the list of export and import, anything can be imported from Bangladesh into India but from India to Bangladesh there is restriction.

He said that the reason why these restrictions have been there is because nobody has moved to ask for the removal of those restrictions those products.

“Tripura has made the initiative and 10-15 more products have been removed from the restriction list,” he said.

The Chief Minister pointed out that Meghalaya has to do a similar exercise, for its fruits and vegetables to go to Bangladesh, in the fruit processing units.

“There needs to be testing labs in our exit points. We do have the manpower, the buildings but we don’t have the labs. So even though those products are not in the restriction list, but because we don’t have labs in those locations we are not able to sell our products to Bangladesh,” Conrad pointed out.

On the Shillong-Dawki road he said that this was a very critical infrastructure but the state government is waiting for certain clearances from the defence ministry since some land along the road belongs to them.

“We are waiting for the NOCs from the defence ministry which is taking a bit of time. Once we get clearance we can work on it fast since it is a critical project for us.power is one area we are looking at,” the Chief Minister said.

On the power sector, Conrad sad that there are almost 5-6 projects which are in the phase of being implemented for upgradation and some are new ones.

“Which as a whole add 700 MW to our capacity. If that happens then we will have some power to sell to Bangladesh,” he said.

Conrad also pointed out that these are massive projects which require a lot of effort and funds.
