Meghalaya records highest single day spike in COVID-19 cases

SHILLONG, Sep 5: Meghalaya on Saturday recorded the highest single day spike of COVID-19 cases with 182 even as another death was reported on Friday in West Khasi Hills district, taking the number of fatalities to 15.

Director of Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War informed that the deceased has been identified as Thangsing Nongsiej of Ksehkohlong, Mawthadraishan Block.

“He was brought to Mairang Civil Hospital with difficulty in breathing and when tested he was found to be COVID-19 positive. Because of his condition he was referred to Shillong Civil Hospital but died on the way,” Dr. War informed

Of the new positive cases on Saturday, East Khasi Hills district recorded the most with 121 cases (armed and paramilitary forces – five and others – 116), Ri-Bhoi 31 (armed and paramilitary forces – 13 and others – 18), East Garo Hills – 15, West Garo Hills – 12 (armed and paramilitary forces – seven, others – five), North Garo Hills – two and West Khasi Hills – one.

Dr. War also informed that of the new cases, there are 15 health workers which includes doctors and nurses.

He said that seven staffs nurses and six others staffs in Civil Hospital, while in Ganesh Das Hospital a doctor and a nurse tested positive for COVID-19.

The district wise break up of the positive cases are – East Khasi Hills 915 (armed and paramilitary forces – 166, others – 749), West Garo Hills 144 (armed and paramilitary forces – 97, others – 47), Ri-Bhoi 120 (armed and paramilitary forces – 29, others – 91), East Garo Hills – 97, West Khasi Hills – 31, East Jaintia Hills – 25, South Garo Hills – 22 (armed and paramilitary forces – 11, others – 11), North Garo Hills – eight, West Jaintia Hills – eight, South West Garo Hills – three and South West Khasi Hills – one.

Dr. War informed that the total active cases in the state now stands at 1374.

The Director of Health Services also said that the state recorded 59 new recoveries in Saturday. East Khasi Hills recorded 48 recoveries (armed and paramilitary forces – four, others – 44), West Garo Hills – eight, Ri-Bhoi – two and East Garo Hills – one. The total recovered cases in the State now stands at 1527.

The number of samples sent for testing till date are – 97550, a total of 94418 samples tested negative and the reports of 216 are awaited.

The number of people from outside Meghalaya who have entered the state till date are 33424.

Dr. War also informed that in main Secretariat building so far nine cases has been detected.
