SHILLONG, Dec 10: The Meghalaya cabinet on Monday approved an ordinance which would amend section 5 of the Meghalaya Lokayukta Act, 2014.
Section 5 of the Act reads, “The Governor shall take or cause to be taken all necessary steps for the appointment of a new Chairperson and Members at least three months before the expiry of the term of such Chairperson or Member, as the case may be, in accordance with the procedure laid down in this Act.”
However, presently, the state government has been able to appoint only the chairman of the anti-corruption ombudsman- PK Musahary.
“To make this office of the chairman functional..there was one proposal which needs to be amended. The proposal which needs to be amended is Section 5 of the original act which says provided that no decision of the Lokayukta shall be invalidated due to the vacany created due non-availability and non-appointment of chairperson or members,” state deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong said.
“We wanted to see that the chairman himself can become fully functional with the amendment of this act,” Tynsong added.
