SHILLONG, Aug 27: National People’s Party (NPP) candidate and five time legislator Martin M Danggo was defeated from Ranikor by the wayside to a newcomer Pius Marweiñ of the United Democratic Party (UDP).
It may be mentioned during the February 27, general assembly election Danggo defeated Marweiñ by a margin of 2002 votes.
The defeat of Danggo dented the hopes of the NPP to edge out the Congress as the single largest party in the Meghalaya Assembly.
In the 60-member house, the NPP and the Congress are tied at 20 MLAs each.
The South Tura seat was held by the NPP. But Agatha Sangma resigned to pave way for Conrad, who needed to be elected by September 6, to remain as Chief Minister of the state.

In a four cornered contest the NPP candidate secured 13, 656 votes while Charlotte bagged 5,235 votes and the other two John Leslee K. Sangma and Kris Kabul A. Sangma (Independents) polled 2211 and 897 each.
