SHILLONG, Mar 7: Sitting MP, Vincent H Pala and former Willamnagar legislator, Deborah C Marak will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election, AICC sources said.
While Pala will contest from the Shillong seat, Marak will contest from Tura.
According to AICC sources, the names of the two were recommended after the approval of the majority members of the Election Committee of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).
Sources also informed that the AICC has already received the recommendations and now it is upto the the high command whether to allot them the party ticket.
Sources also told that for the Shillong seat only the name of Pala was discussed while for the Tura seat apart from Marak, the name of former cabinet minister and MLA, Zenith Sangma were discussed.
MPCC sources said that the names of Pala and Marak were recommended after thorough discussion and after due consultations with the leaders of the district and block Congress.
MPCC sources said that for the Tura seat the name of Marak was recommended since she had fared better in previous MP elections.
The closest the Congress came to defeat Late Purno A Sangma after he left the party was in 2009 when his daughter, Agatha Sangma defeated Marak by 17, 945 votes.
Meanwhile, other sources informed that the name of Zenith was forwarded at the insistence of Dr Mukul Sangma who is also the member of the MPCC’s election.
Zenith’s name was sent at the last minute after the election committee had already made its decision.
It was informed the Dr Sangma was late for the meeting, which was held last week.
However, MPCC chief Celestine Lyngdoh was not available for comment.
