Tura, Nov 29: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress on Friday gheraoed the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and raised slogans as a mark of protest against the executive committee of the NPP led coalition, refusing from resigning their posts.
It may be reminded, on Wednesday, Nov 27, the NPP led members led by its CEM, Dipul Marak walked out of the GHADC fearing a defeat in the no confidence motion to the Congress led opposition, after losing the preceding election to the deputy chairman’s post.
The MPYC gheraoed the GHADC to protest the non cooperation of the CEM, Dipul Marak, over his refusal to resign even after the defeat accusing him of absconding from the office after they lost.
“This is an absolute and blatant disregard for the democratic process. Their EC has already been voted out. They brought this upon themselves by their incompetence. Moreover, there was even an attempt to manipulate the number of votes after the fact. They should understand that GHADC is not their personal property that they can do anything at will,” said the PMYC president, Richard Ma
The Congress members further alleged that the NPP was now trying to to subvert the process of tendering for the haats, etc, by illegal mean.
“They are trying to allot these without free and fair process and signing the orders backdated, which would not be the first time,” added Marak.
“Our sources also tell us that certain high ranking staffs are doing the bidding of the Minister for District Council Affairs, James Sangma, on the promise of promotions and other benefits thereby allowing Dipul Marak and his EC to break the rules and loot the GHADC,”, he further alleged.
The protestors demanded that the Dipul Marak led EC take responsibility and resign following the very laws that they took oath to uphold when they were voted as MDCs.
