MTET paper leak case: 7 arrested, prime suspect absconds

Tura, Feb 7: The Meghalaya Teachers’ Eligibility Test (MTET) paper leak has seen 7 people arrested in the case with the prime accused absconding as per latest inputs provided by the West Garo Hills police.

The latest comes even as Rajabala MLA from the Congress, Azad Zaman questioned the police investigation after the arrests were made stating that those arrested were innocent and had even reported the matter to the invigilators.

Zaman through a press release yesterday had asserted that some of the students arrested were provided the paper by mistake and in good faith had inquired as to whether the same was genuine or not through.

“After sitting for the exam and confirming the authenticity of the leak, the students even reported the matter to the invigilator. Worryingly despite the paper leak, the authorities continued with the exam,” said the Rajabala MLA.

“Why has the police arrested those innocent students and not arrested the original culprit? Why have they not interrogated those who were entrusted to set the question paper and those under whose custody question papers were kept? Why not question those who were entrusted to print the question paper? My intention is not to interfere but at the same time it is not judicious to harass innocent students,” said Zaman.

The MLA said that the leak required a CBI inquiry but was unfortunately still being investigated by the police.

“This is just an attempt by the government to divert the attention of the people in order to save their skin by making those innocent students as scapegoats,” alleged Zaman while terming the arrest illegal and unlawful.

The MTET paper leak took place on the first day of the exam, Feb 3 after which a FIR was filed by a Shilong based lawyer at Tura. Two NGOs from the plain belt have also demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter.

Explaining the arrests, the superintendent of police, West Garo Hills, Dr MGR Kumar said, “The arrests were made after a proper inquiry and the seven arrested were the ones with criminal motive to pass the exam through cheating as well as distributing the same. We have not arrested anyone who reported the matter to invigilators.”

Police further confirmed that attempts were being made to arrest the kingpin who till now is absconding.
