SHILLONG, Oct 26: Opposition leader in the Meghalaya Assembly, Dr Mukul Sangma today alleged that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government is involved in facilitating illegal mining of coal despite the ban by National Green Tribunal (NGT).
Dr Sangma said that there has been reaction from people including some NGOs which have gone to the Supreme Court seeking intervention into the allegations that illegal mining is still taking place.
The opposition leader said that there are number of developments that have taken place after the formation of the new government and officers are being transferred left and right not just the officers of one department.
“If you look at the manner in which the government has acted upon, there is a reason to believe that they were trying to pressurize the officers to engage in facilitating illegal mining,” he alleged.
According to him, the government first removed the Director of Mining and Geology, and appointed another officer in his place.
Dr Sangma further stated that this officer too was also shunted out and they brought somebody else.
Calling out for a thorough investigation into the matter, the opposition leader said, “Now what is the reason, why the second officer was again transferred within a short period of time?”
He also said that there should be an investigation to find out as to what has happened after the third officer was posted.
“Has anything happened because of the pressure from the people who are in power, the ministers,” Dr Sangma said.
He also slammed the frequent transfers of officers even as he alleged that those who “probably” do not comply with the directive and who did not succumb to the pressure of the ministers are getting transferred.
