SHILLONG, Feb 25: Leader of Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma today said that developmental programmes and investments in the interest of the people residing in the border villages must be allowed but when any of the counterpart takes up any developmental programme at the level of the district authorities they should inform the other.
“Until the whole areas of difference related issue is not resolved neither Assam nor Meghalaya obviously can say that now it belongs to them,” Sangma told reporters in a press conference on Tuesday.
The leader of opposition also said that during the last preceding two years you have seen that there has been a number of incidents one after another.
The Leader of Opposition also narrated that during his tenure as Chief Minister of the state a clear stand was taken by Meghalaya and Assam that peace be maintained (in the inter state border) and not a situation was created where there were perceived to be confrontational somehow creating fear psychosis in the mind of the people.
According to the opposition leader it is unfortunate the kind of mistrust, doubt and tension that is prevailing along those areas of difference now, is not something in sync with which the two states wanted to create mutually.
He also informed that both the states have been committed to ensure that there is no more new settlement in those areas of differences.
He also informed that in the interest of those people living along the Assam-Meghalaya inter state border who had been adversely affected because of tension due to the dispute both governments wanted to ensure to initiate various developmental programes in the interest of those affected people in the areas of difference.
“We say that it’s an area of difference but even though that a situation exist pending solution we must ensure that people in those areas don’t suffer and this commitment has been mutual and accepted,” Sangma added.
