SHILONG, Sep 4: Meghalaya leader of opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma on Wednesday, flagged the illegal transportation of coal in the state and how government machineries are being used to facilitate it.
Speaking to media persons, Dr Sangma alleged Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma of being directly involved in the whole process.
“The kind of modus operandi that is in operation today under the direct command of the Chief Minister and his other people who are partners in crime is going to create a dangerous situation in the state in the years to come,” the opposition leader said.
He alleged that the government has been engaged in changing the inventory of the stock of mined coal in the state even as he stated that it even went to the extent of submitting such claims before the Supreme Court to ultimately misinform the Apex Court and get certain kind of leverage for further transportation of coal which does not exist.
“If the government claim is that there is coal which doesn’t exist the moment they get these kind of order they will engage in illegal mining activities and when illegal mining activities is facilitated through these modus operandi then you can understand what is the original intend,” Dr Sangma said.
Dr Sangma while pointing to an open letter penned to the Chief Minister on the issue written by one person from East Garo Hills, alleged that this exercise is under the patronage of the Chief Minister, even as he stated that he (Chief Minister) has been engaged in only in this focus of ensuring how to see that by whatever means transportation of coal for all the illegally mined coal can continue.
The opposition leader said that he will take up the issue with NGT and the NGT appointed committee and ask them to verify all those claims which have been placed as part of the inventory.
“There is no dearth of means to get the correct information. Without loss of time this has to be verified otherwise the whole issue of existence of any tribunal or authorities to regulate the errant behavior of people engaging in illegal mining will be mockery it will be a mockery of the existing law,” the opposition leader said.
He also flagged the issue of rampant and frequent transfer and posting of officials to facilitate these illegalities.
Dr Sangma said that various officers like Commissioner of Transport, officers under the Directorate of Mining and Geology, the police department, who are supposed to actually ensure compliance of order of any judicial system has been tampered upon to facilitate illegalities.
“This particular government is going to destroy the future and create an unprecedented future for the state where the state will be in chaotic condition,” the opposition leader said.
