NESO demands implementation of NRC in region, opposes Citizenship (Amendment Bill)

SHILLONG, Oct 11: North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), a conglomerate of various student bodies of the region has demanded implementation of National Register of Citizen (NRC) in the region even as it opposed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.

Submitting a memorandum to Home Minister, Rajnath Singh on Wednesday, NESO stated that the centre should extend Inner Line Permit (ILP) and NRC to the whole of the northeastern states.

“In order to protect the indigenous people of the NE from further assimilation by dominant communities and their culture, the provisions of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873 popularly known as the Inner Line Permit system must be extended to the entire north eastern region,” NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa stated in the memorandum.

The NESO also stated that the centre should take immediate initiatives to prepare a register of citizens by updating the NRC 1951, for the whole region, which is the only official document on citizenship.

“We welcome the preparation of NRC for Assam as per the Assam Accord and under the continuous supervision of the Supreme Court. NRC should be prepared for each of the states for the whole of the northeast. The modalities may be different for different states,” the memorandum signed by Jyrwa stated.

The NESO opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill stated that the Bill and the Foreigners (Amendment) order 2015, Passport (Entry into India) Amendment Rules, was introduced to provide citizenship to the Hindu Bangladeshis who entered illegally into Assam and the other north east states till December 2014.

“Though the two notifications and the Bill are applicable to the whole country, they will affect most the states of the North East region. Again the government of India has also introduced the provision of long term visa for the Hindu Bangladeshis,” the NESO chairman stated.

The NESO alleged that all these measures are aimed at helping the illegal Bangladeshis to obtain Indian citizenship and settle in the region even as it stated that it will strongly opposes all these measures and will not accept under any circumstances.
