NGO leader and RTI activist killed in East Jaiñtia Hills

Jowai, March 20: President of Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF) and RTI activist, Poipynhun Majaw on Tuesday was found dead with multiple injuries on his head in Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills, police said.

According to police, they suspect that the NGO leader was murdered by unidentified miscreants.

Police informed that his body was recovered from an area Umsyllih which is located near the dumping ground of Khliehriat Town Committee.

The dumping ground is only about two kms away from the DC office on Khliehriat Rymbai Road.

Speaking to journalist, police chief of East Jaiñtia Hills, Nazarius Lamare informed that the body of Poipynhun was spotted by a local resident of Khliehriat on Monday night.

“We were informed at around 10 PM and found that the body was lying in a pool of blood,” said Lamare.

The police chief also said, it is a case of murder, but the reason is yet to be ascertained and we will leave no stone unturned to track for people responsible for the crime, he added.

Poipynhun a leader of the JYF for six years now had recently exposed a large misappropriation of public funds in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) through his RTI findings.

The JYF president had also revealed that cement companies in Jaintia Hills were mining without permission from the Council.

Meanwhile, the RTI activists in Meghalaya including the CSWO has condemned the murder.
