Shillong, Nov 11: NCP MLA from Gambegre, Saleng Sangma today informed the assembly that some villages in his constituency receive electricity bills despite not having electricity and left the house baffled during question hour on Day 4 of Meghalaya Assembly’s autumn session 2020.
The MLA from Gambegre elaborated that few blocks under Gambegre, including Badupara and Mibonpara area under Dalu block get electricity bills in spite of not being electrified, and that he had raised the issue in the last session.
To this, the Power Minister replied that the legislator must be talking about de-electrified villages.
Saleng clarified that those residences had never been electrified, and yet were receiving bills.
In response, James said that it was a serious matter and that he will ask the power department to conduct an inquiry.
Saleng then reiterated his statement feverishly to which the Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh joked that the legislator should have patience and that when those villages are electrified there won’t be any bills.
The Gambegre MLA then stated that the power minister should make enquiries to see if these bills were a part of ‘mala fide intentions’ by some officers in the department.
James said that assumptions cannot be made, but added that the department will find the root to the problem and take action if there is any malpractice.
