“NPP-led govt sanctioned 90 MW solar power”

James Sangma addressing the media on Thursday

Shillong, Dec 3: Meghalaya Power Minister James Sangma today informed that since the NPP-led government came into power, 90 megawatts worth of solar power has been sanctioned and initiated for the state.

Highlighting the achievements of the ruling government, following continuous allegations by the opposition in regards to MeECL, James said that their government will be adding 100 megawatts of solar generation in the next six months.

He added that in order to reduce unfortunate incidents of electrocution, due to no fencing of transformers or exposed wiring, the government has decided to go for 100% underground cabling in Shillong, Tura and Jowai.

The power minister also said that renovation and modernization of Hydro Power Projects is also under process and will be completed in 6-8 Months. “This will help us to increase the efficiency and help in more generation,” he said.

He stated that the government is also planning to upgrade 2,214 kilometres of distribution lines in the state to minimise losses and improve efficiency of electricity transmission to the houses of consumers.

Last Month, the Leader of Opposition Dr. Mukul Sangma had accused the ruling MDA government of using the corporation as a “Milch Cow.”

Meanwhile, responding to the demand of MeECL employees for the release of pending salaries, he said that the current government is looking for long term solutions to plug revenue leakages and increase bill efficiency.

He said that the government is trying to solve the issue of pending salary but added that the corporation is in financial stress.
