NPP wins lone Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya

SHILLONG, Jun 19: The National People’s Party (NPP) has won the election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the State.

It’s candidate Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi defeated, Kennedy Cornelius Khyriem of the opposition Congress.

The NPP with support from it’s allies under the umbrella of Meghalaya Democratic polled 39 votes while the Congress got 19 votes. One vote was invalid.

Out of the 60 legislators, 59 MLAs casted their votes while, Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement, MLA from North Shillong abstained from voting.

The lone Rajya Sabha seat from Meghalaya fell vacant after the term of Congress leader, Wansuk Syiem expired on April 12 this year.

The election was to be conducted on March 26, but it was postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 which led to the imposition of the nationwide lockdown to prevent its spread.
