SHILLONG, May 1: The ruling National People’s Party (NPP) today won the Williamnagar assembly seat. Its candidate Marcuise N Marak defeated his nearest rival and Independent candidate Sengbsth R Marak by a margin of 4,860 votes.
Congress candidate and sitting legislator Deborah C Marak came third while the wife of killed NCP candidate Krenilla Marak came a distant fourth.
Marcuise made a comeback to the state assembly he was elected on an NCP ticket in 2008 but lost to Deborah in 2013 when he contested on a NPP ticket.
It may be mentioned that polling for the Williamnagar seat was not held along with the rest of the state on February 27 after NCP candidate Jonathone N Sangma was killed in an IED blast on February 18.
Polling to the Willamnagar seat was held on April 27. A total of over 25,200 voted on for the 9 candidates in the fray with a voting percentage of 78.82. The seat has over 32,000 voters.
After winning the Williamnagar seat, both the NPP and the Congress have 20 seats each in the Meghalaya Assembly.
The NPP man took an early lead into the counting which continued to grow leading to his win by 4900 votes.
NPP secured 9558 votes, Sengbath (Ind) got 4698, Deborah (INC) 4517, Krinilla (NCP) 4009, SR Marak (BJP) 865, Mahamsing (UDP) 510, Lahatson (Ind) 506, Jan Arengh (Ind) 321, Siljong Marak (Ind) 230 while 276 voted for NOTA.
“I would like to thank the people of Williamnagar for voting for the NPP. This is a victory of the people of Williamnagar. I will try my level best to uplift the area and bring development. I want to once again thank them for voting for the NPP,” said newly elected Marcuise Marak.
When asked as to whether the Congress fielding two candidates, Deborah and Sengbath (Independent) helped in his win, Marak acceded to the fact that it did.
“It definitely helped that the Congress fielded two candidates,” said Marak.
On being asked as to what sectors would he try and work on immediately, Marak said, “Education, drinking water, school infrastructure as well as health are the priority areas for me. Will look to improve these on a priority basis,” said the NPP MLA.
Marcuise further thanked the CM, Conrad Sangma for his role in the win in Williamnagar as well as his party workers and leaders.

On this occasion, as we celebrate the victory of NPP and our candidate Marcuise Marak, I would like to thank God for being with us in our journey and mission to create a new Meghalaya,” said CM, Conrad Sangma on his party leader’s victory.
“I am confident that Marcuise Marak will provide leadership and represent the voice and aspiration of the people of Williamnagar Constituency. Marcuise Marak has been part of our party for long and has worked hard to strengthen the party. His experience and leadership qualities will help NPP to further push growth and development in Meghalaya,” he added.
The CM further thanked his party leaders, workers and supporters stating that the victory was not only of Williamnagar by for the entire state of Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, the United Democratic Party has six, People’s Democratic Front four, the BJP two, Hills State People’s Democratic Part two, Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement one, NCP one and three independents in the Assembly.
The Ampati seat which was vacated by former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma will go to polls on May 27. Dr Sangma who had contested from two seats in the February 27 poll – Ampati and Songsak won both the seats. He retained Songsak and left the Ampati seat for his daughter, Miani D Shira.
