SHILLONG, Jul 10: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) has indefinitely closed its Out Patient Department (OPD) and emergency services after a resident of BSF, Umpling tested positive for COVID-19 on July 9.
According to the NEIGRIHMS Director, Dr. P. Bhattacharyya, this has been done after an “inadvertent” exposure to COVID-19 in the institute.
“The patient has had an extensive contact footprint in the hospital. Due to this the hospital needs to be decontaminated and internal contact tracing is to be undertaken,” Bhattacharyya said.
He added that this being a major exercise, the OPD and emergency services will be closed till further orders.
However, the Director said that the indoor patient care services, will remain operational.
According to Bhattacharyya, the patient a resident of BSF campus, Umpling had a RT-PCR test done on July 1 which was negative.
“He was subsequently admitted in the orthopedics ward (non COVID ward) on July 4, based on his recent report. He developed fever during his stay and on July 9, a repeat RT-PCR test was done which was positive,” the NEIGRIHMS Director said.
The patient has since been shifted to the COVID ward.
