Pala bats for alternative ILP

Shillong, Jan 11: Congress MP from Shillong Vincent Pala said that the state needs alternative Inner Line Permit (ILP) with scope for employment opportunities for the indigenous people of Meghalaya.

“Not only protection (of the indigenous) people you should also think about being employed,” Pala said.

According to him, with the state facing ban of traditional coal mining and limestone mining restricted, tourism is the only sector which now an employment generator.

He, however said that the Congress is and will always be for the protection of the indigenous people of Meghalaya even as he said that the institution of Sixth Schedule for the protection of the tribals was brought by the Congress government.

“Even big institutions to the state were built by consecutive Congress governments,” Pala.

The Congress MP also said that he will not succumb to any pressure tactics of the various groups demanding ILP in Meghalaya.

“I will only agree to issues which are beneficial to my people,” the Shillong MP said.

Pala said that he is not in favour of putting up gates to check influx but the traditional institutions of the state should implement stricter measures to check influx.
