SHILLONG, Jul 10: Pynshngaiñ N Syiem on Tuesday resigned as Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hill Autonomous District Council (KHADC) ahead of the vote of no confidence against the Executive Committee (EC) led by him.
On Tuesday morning as soon as the House in the KHADC assembled at 10 am for the emergent session, the Chairman of the Council LG Nongsiej read out the resignation letter of Syiem in the House.
It may be mentioned that Syiem had lost majority on Monday itself when 17 Members of District Council (MDCs) formed a new alliance christened as the Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA).
The KHDA consists of members from from NPP (4), UDP (5), HSPDP (3) and PDF (4) and 1 Independent.
It may be mentioned that the state Governor, Ganga Prasad on the advice of the state government convened a special session after receiving an official complaint from the 17 MDCs on the functioning of the Executive Committee led by KHADC CEM Pynshngain N Syiem.
Sources have informed that Syiem is contemplating to contest the Ranikor by poll from a PDF ticket against NPP’s MM Danggo.
Later speaking to media persons, Syiem said that very session there has been always a move to topple the Executive Committee led by him.
“Only after I have initiated the exercise to propose the common candidate for Ranikor by-election, there is move to remove me from the post of CEM. Many of the political parties are not happy with my decision since being a CEM,” Syiem said.
He also said that in the recent past, he tried his best to bring together all the MDCs under one roof.
Virtually confirming that he will throw hat for the Ranikor by-poll, Syiem said that this attempt to topple him from the chair of the CEM is a big relief for him.
“I am happy with my decision to resign from the post of the CEM and to allow others to lead the Council,” he added.
On allegations that he dropped his colleagues from the Executive Committee (EC) on his own whims and fancies, Syiem clarified that it was his prerogative as the CEM to do so.
“Even the Chief Minister does it. A member expresses no confidence on the EC when he himself is still part and parcel of it. Then I have no other option but to remove him from the post of the EM,” he said.
On allegations of diversion of funds by the MDCs, against him, Syiem said that he called the EC meeting and also the meeting of the PDA to approve the same.
“It is childish politics, when the MDCs had written to him it was too late since the Programme Implementation Committee has the various projects and schemes under the special assistance from the Centre,” he informed.
