Polo Market Complex for street vendors & hawkers inaugurated

Shillong, Aug 13: The Polo Market Complex, designed specifically to rehabilitate street vendors and hawkers in the area, was inaugurated today by Urban Affairs Minister Hamletson Dohling.

He was accompanied by Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek, MLA Adelbert Nongrum, Director Urban Affairs E Kharmalki, Shillong Municipal Board CEO BS Sohliya, officials from Urban Affairs Department among others.

The new market complex is built on an area of 3000 square meters and was funded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. It is a state of the art building which has proved to be a benchmark in revamping the panoramic view of the Polo Area of Shillong.

The complex was implemented by NBCC Ltd, A Government of India Enterprise at a sanctioned amount of 21. 41 crore. Construction work began on March 1, 2017, and was completed by December 21, 2019.

The market complex has a total of 297 shops, 148 of which are Type A and 149 Type B. It consists of 46 Vegetable shops, 26 Fish shops, and 20 each for Pork and Beef sellers, 11 for Chicken, 8 Mutton, 18 tea stalls, 5 Groceries, 4 Pan Shops, and 126 others. It also has 27 Godowns.

Street Hawkers and Vendors in the Polo area who have registered themselves with the Shillong Municipal Board are eligible for acquiring shop license in the new complex.

The Urban Affairs Minister also informed that a 75 crore ‘New Polo Market’ will be constructed beside the Complex.
