Pongtung gateway to Mawlynnong and Shnongpdeng can be a major tourist hub

Shillong, Jan 6: Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday inaugurated the community-cum- multi-facility hall at Pongtung village under Pynursla constituency.

Speaking at the function, Tynsong informed that the facility was built at a cost of Rs. 1.20 crore.

The Deputy Chief Minister also said that Pongtung village which is the gateway to two most important tourist spots of the State – Mawlynnong and Shnongpdeng can also be a major destination, if better facilities are provided.

“Pongtung can give other tourist sites a run for the money,” he said.

He also urged the parents to educate their children since in the near future the area will attract major tourists.

Tynsong also encouraged the villagers to make local products so that tourists can buy them as souvenirs, even as he said that facilities like camping sites and parking space should be built for the benefit of tourists.

The Deputy Chief Minister who is also the local MLA informed that this year the government will install 700 solar street lights from Siatbakon to Usmyiem, Lyngkhat and Nongshken villages.

R. M. Kurbah, Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner during whose tenure as Director, Border Area Development department the scheme was sanctioned said that people of the area are hardworking.

However, Kurbah urged the villagers to desist from taking up broomstick cultivation since this crop dries up water sources.

“Broomstick is a one generation crop. Therefore for the benefit of the future generations other sustainable economic activities have to be taken up,” she said.
