SHILLONG, Jan 6: Leader of Opposition in Meghalaya, Dr Mukul Sangma alleged that the rhetoric of the BJP and the National People’s Party (NPP) during the election that coal mining in the state will be opened within six months if they come to power has been implemented.
“What I want to say is that they have had their rhetoric of opening coal mining within six months so they meant to open illegal coal mining. That is what can be interpreted from what we see now,” Dr Sangma said after an emergent Congress Legislature Party meeting on Sunday.
According to him, that the fact is that coal mining have started whether it is legal or illegal people living in those remote areas do not know.
“They might have thought that BJP and NPP must have open up coal mining in six months, this may be the result that they have open up (illegal) coal mining,” Dr Sangma added.
He also said that recent developments which culminated in the trapping of 15 coal miners in an illegal coal mine in East Jaintia Hills district and the order of the NGT wherein a penalty of Rs 100 crore had been slap on the state is a shame.
“Now these developments are something which is not acceptable to the people of the state. Meghalaya cannot be known for such unpleasant things happening on the ground. This is an outcome of the extreme greed of the people in power and that is why we are saddened by this development,” the opposition leader said.
