Shillong, Mar 9: Excise Minister Kyrmen Shylla today informed that the revenue collected from Excise Duty on Indian Made Foreign Liquor during 2020-2021 was Rs 268.79 crores and Value Added Taxes was Rs 140 crores.
The Minister was responding to a question placed by Mawphlang MLA SK Sunn.
On whether the department is contemplating to legalise local brew, which is a local alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice, Shylla responded that since rice is the staple food of the state and it is primarily used for food consumption purposes only.
Sunn then questioned as to why rice can’t be used as raw material to produce local brew so as to add to the economy of the state, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stepped in to inform that there is a shortfall in the supply of rice.
“Rice is a staple diet of the state, we produce about 3 Lakh metric tonnes and we have about 4 Lakh metric tonnes of consumption, clear shortage in the supply of rice, so therefore consumption of rice is a necessity,” he stated.
