SMB gives Sweeper’s Lane residents 15 days time to provide years and nature of occupation

SHILLONG, Nov 28: The High Level Committee (HLC) of the Meghalaya Government formed on the Sweeper’s Lane, Them Iewmawlong issue, Wednesday has given the resident’s staying there to come forward and report to the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) as to their occupation and years since they have been in occupation and its nature.

The HLC has given the residents 15 days time to complete the task.

Speaking to media persons, Meghalaya deputy chief minister who is also the chairman of the committee, Prestone Tynsong said that the notice t these residents were served on November 26 and December 10, 2018 is the last date for submitting and filling their pro-forma.

“After the Shillong Municipal Board had examined the various documents we found out that there are 128 employees of the board staying at Sweeper’s Lane, on further scrutiny of the residents it was found out that 56 others were employed with other government departments,” Tynsong informed.

According to the deputy chief minister, as per the report available with the HLC there are 184 persons who are genuine government employees. However, Tynsong pointed out that the HLC has not been able to get the final figure since the last time the SMB went to survey the residents did not cooperated.

It may be mentioned that earlier this year, the SMB was supposed to take the head counts of the people residing in the area as per the directive of theHLC in order to identify the legal and illegal settlers in the area.

When the SMB went there to make head counts of the people residing in the area majority of the houses were locked.

Meanwhile, as per the order of the SMB, the information furnished by the residents of Sweeper’s Lane would be used for taking “administrative decision”, including examination of legal claim of the residents, if any.

It may be pointed out that an agreement was signed on January 4th 1954 between the Syiem of Mylliem and the SMB where in the former had allowed the latter t use the vacant plot of Sweeper’s Lane for erecting shops, go-down, and the remaining portion to be used for accommodating the Sweepers.

It may be reminded that the HLC was formed after the May 31, incident at Sweepers’ Lane which snow-balled into a major violence in the area.

The HLC was set up by the Meghalaya government – tasked to study the feasibility of shifting the residents of the Sweepers’ Line to another location to clear the congestion in the busy market area.
