Sou motu action on transfer of jail land for National Games

SHILLONG, Nov 16: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC), has taken sou motu case of a news report that the Meghalaya government is converting a land at Mawdiangdiang meant for construction of central jail in the state to the National Games.

According to reports the Shillong District Jail has 460 inmates against its capacity of 170 inmates and the same in overcrowded for which attempts have been made to complete the Nongstoin jail very soon where 100 to 200 inmatews can be shifted.

But according to the report land proposed for the central jail in the outskirts of the city has been allotted to the National Games 2022.

“The matter is very serious and grave as it relates to gross violation of human rights of the inmates of that jail whether convicts, under-trials or foreign nationals,” The MHRC said.

The MHRC in its order dated October 31 last month has directed the state government through the Chief Secretary, to take necessary action and to submit a “detailed status report” on the issue and to submit the report within 60 days from the date of receipt of the notice.
