Spike in cases a surprise, but could have happened to any state: CM

Shillong, July 13: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday admitted that the spike in COVID-19 cases came as a surprise for the state government, however, he added that it could have happened to any state or region.

“Till we find a vaccine, we need to be ready with a rapid response system.
Were we surprised? Yes, but it can happen to anyone, to any state,” he told Shillong Mail

He stated that the rise in cases were mainly in different clusters. The largest chunk, he explained, was the BSF cluster, followed by returnees cluster, Khanapara cluster, the wedding attendees and at NEIGRIHMS.

The Chief Minister said that the government’s challenge was to break the transmission chain in these different clusters. “Because the spike is in cluster formats, we feel that it can be contained once we contain the clusters,” Sangma said.

He stated that the chain can be broken only through behaviour change. “The only way to fight the virus is to be aware of it… the individual should realise that behaviour change can make a big difference… every individual should act responsibly,” Sangma appealed.

Regarding the 41 wedding attendees, he stated that strict action will be taken against them for not providing proper information to authorities and risking the lives of citizens.

Fortunately, in the last 24 hours, there has been no increase in cases in the wedding attendee cluster, Sangma added.
