SHILLONG, July 11: Meghalaya government has decided to observe a two-day total lockdown on July 13th and 14th in Shillong City Agglomeration region. The government aims to ‘Lockdown the virus through Behaviour Change’.
Shillong city and surrounding areas shall be under curfew till 6 AM of the 15th of July, 2020, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stated.
The Chief Minister raised concerns that more than 95% of cases that are presently active in the State are from Shillong.
As of today, the total active COVID-19 cases stand at 236. The total tally is 283, of which 45 have recovered and two death recorded.
The total number of samples tested is 23,454 of which 22,902 are negative. The results of 290 are awaited.
“Two distinct and worrisome characteristics of this virus is its high transmissibility and its invisible nature (asymptomatic). The only way to handle the spread of the virus is understanding these two important characteristics of this virus by every individual”, he stated.
He added that right understanding (of the virus) will lead to right behaviour among everyone for taking responsibility of their actions, both in personal and public space.
Sangma appealed to all citizens to practices the necessity of wearing a mask, maintain social distancing and practising hand hygiene.
“This time shall be productively used by the Community Covid Management Committees and the newly set up Behaviour Change Management Committees of various localities to inculcate awareness about the cardinal principles of Behaviour Change at the household level. Remember we need to fight and isolate this virus together, not just the Government or the Health workers, but we all need to be Covid Warriors,” he said.
He also informed that the lockdown period will be used to trace the contacts of the positive persons in Shillong.
Citizens of Shillong City and surrounding areas have been urged to adhere to the lockdown.
