SHILLONG, May 30: The Tangkhul Naga community living in Shillong has urged the state government to take steps to arrest the culprits involved in the alleged killing of a girl from the community.
In the letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma and Home Minister, James K Sangma stated that the nature and circumstances as well as the merciless injury inflicted on the body of the victim is prima facie evidence that she was suspected to be abducted, raped and murdered by the culprits.
“Such barbaric and inhuman treatment and assault only amounts to infringement of her fundamental rights to life and liberty but also attack to the core values of human dignity; liberty of the citizens and the very foundation of civilised society,” the letter stated.
The Tangkhul Nagas of Shillong said that such criminal acts meted out to innocent girls posed grave danger to the safety and security of womanhood in the state.
“If left unchecked (it) would be detrimental to the student community in Shillong in particular,” the letter said.
