SHILLONG, Jul 25: Three officials of the Atomic Mineral Division (AMD) were injured and two vehicles belonging to the office were damaged in an attack by unknown miscreants near Wahkaji, South West Khasi Hills district on Wednesday.
Wahkaji is about 140 kms from Shillong and is en route to the proposed Uranium mining site.
An official of the South West Khasi Hills district authorities while confirming the incident, said, “Three persons were injured in the attack by miscreants and one Bolero and a jeep was also damaged.”
The injured has been shifted to Mawkyrwat Community Health Centre (CHC).
Soon after the attack the Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district Herbert G Lyngdoh and the magistrates rushed to the place of occurrence.
The area is considered vulnerable in view of the constant opposition by pressure groups against the AMD as well as the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) to carry on with the preliminary works to extract uranium from the area.
According to sources, it is understood the AMD officials were en route to the Uranium deposit belt before they were attacked by the group of miscreants.
