SHILLONG, Mar 28: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) will not have a candidate for the Parliamentary election after its candidate from the Shillong seat, THS Bonney will have to contest as an Independent after a recent High Court order recognising Pyndapborthiaw Saibon as the president of the party.
“We have decided to allow him to contest as an independent after taking into consideration the form A & B submitted by him and also the order passed by the High Court. We have considered his case as valid nominated candidate from the independent category,” Returning Officer for the Shillong parliamentary seat Abhishek Bhagotia said.
It may be pointed out that the KHNAM factions are in a tussle over who represents the party.
To settle the matter, Saibon went to Court, which put a seal on him as the president of the party.
When, Bonney filed his nomination in the forms A and B of the affidavit the name of North Shillong legislator Adelbert Nongrum was mentioned as the party president. The Returning Officer also said that Bonney’s election symbol is a “key”.
Meanwhile, CPI candidate Justice Kharbasanti, withdrew his candidature.
It may be mentioned that Kharbasanti failed to mention the dues of Rs 4.5 lakh with the Meghalaya Rural Bank as part of liability in the affidavit.
“The CPI also admitted they are dues pending in the Meghalaya Rural Bank and consequence to that he has withdrawn his candidature,” Bhagotia said.
Meghalaya with two seats – Shillong and Tura goes to vote on April 11.
