SHILONG, Apr 26: Alert citizens of a locality in Tura town thwarted an attempt by miscreants to rob an ATM in the wee hours of Thursday.
According to police, the ATM at Thakurbari was targetted at around 1:30 am on Thursday but alert residents who raised alarms left the miscreants panicky and their vehicle turned turtle near Rari an hour later.
Later, police were able to apprehend one of the person involved in the attempt to break the ATM.
The person identified as one Ramjan Ali of Hajo, Kamrup in Assam also revealed the names of four other accomplices.
The miscreants came in a while coloured Bolero and carried with them equipments to rob the ATM.
But their plans to break open the ATM was foiled because the sound made while trying to break open the ATM alerted residents who came out of their houses.
“The robbers immediately ran for their lives when they saw people,” Dr Kumar said.
The vehicle used by the miscreants was later found in Rari, North Garo Hills district at around 2:45 am when it overturned.
Police said that one of the miscreants was apprehended when he along with his accomplices were trying to flip over the vehicle which turned turtled.
“We are on the lookout for the others,” the district police chief of West Garo Hills said.
