SHILLONG, May 20: Two cadres of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) surrendered before the Home Minister, James Sangma and state Director General of Police Dr SB Singh today.
The HNLC cadres, a husband-wife duo are residents of South West Khasi Hills district.
Aiborlang Thongni (36) alias “bahbah” of Mawpud village joined the outfit in 2001. He was trained at Chittagong, Bangladesh and was one of the senior most cadre in Bangladesh and was staying in Bilwa village there.
Meanwhile, Rishalin Syiemlieh alias “Lin” (27) of Photjaud village joined the HNLC when she was just 14 years old.
“Immediately on joining she was taken to Bangladesh and made to undergo arms training in Chittagong. She was closely associated with senior cadres of the HNLC,” police said.
The two got married in 2013 and have two children.
The husband-wife duo said that they decided to surrender as life as members of a banned outfit will do harm to their children as they will not grow in a congenial environment.
Moreover, the state Home Minister in his speech at the surrender ceremony reiterated the government’s stand, “”The government of Meghalaya has repeatedly stated that we are committed to rehabilitate those brothers and sisters who would give up activities associated with banned organisations but there will be no negotiations with any group.”
