Tynsong: Assembly Speaker’s Post not UDP’s prerogative

SHILLONG, Aug 13: National People’s Party (NPP) leader and deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said that the Assembly Speaker’s Post is “not the prerogative” of the United Democratic Party (UDP).

However, Tynsong said that the decision of the Speaker’s Post, which was left vacant after the demise of UDP chief, Dr Donkupar Roy will be decided by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) partners.

“We will take the views of all the partners before taking any consensus decision on the Speaker’s post,” Tynsong told media persons.

The NPP leader also said that last year during the formation of the MDA government, Late Dr Roy had himself offered to take up the Speaker’s Post and there was no pre-arranged agreement.

Tynsong said, “As the senior most leader (of the alliance), we were happy when he (Late Dr Donkupar) made the offer.”

It may be mentioned that the UDP had insisted that since Late Dr Roy belonged to the party, the Speaker’s Post should go to them.

Tynsong also said that the UDP has every right to claim the Speaker’s Post, but the final decision will be taken by all the partners within the MDA.
