Shillong, July 6: Villagers from seven villages in Baghmara constituency are desperately in need of a bridge to cross a stream that turns dangerous during peak monsoon.
Presently, the village of Rompa Asim, Mandal Baladinggre, Cheamgre, Gandragre, Dokgre, Rongdong and Ruthagre are using a makeshift bridge made of bamboos tied together to cross the stream.
Villagers including school going children cross the structure on a daily basis. Social activist Greneth M Sangma informed that an ME school lies across the stream.
“This bamboo construction is weak and poses danger to children who need to get to the other side to visit their school. We have approached various authorities to help get a sanction for the bridge so that our school children don’t have to risk their lives to get an education,” said social activist from the area, Greneth M Sangma.
Sangma also added that they have approached Border Area Development Organization (BADO) for help with sanctioning a bridge.
“A proposal was made after a visit by the JE but that, according them is still stuck with the Centre. Promises have been made during elections to ensure the bridge was completed but that has not been fulfilled,” he added.
The activist also expressed unhappiness over the non presence of the local MLA, Samuel Sangma in helping develop their area.
“Our local MLA has never heeded our development calls and we have now stopped expecting much from him. We had to approach other MLAs from our district to see if they could help in providing relief to the villages affected,” he added.
He felt the lack of infrastructure in these areas was an invitation for accidents to happen and appealed to the district administration and whoever was willing to listen to help those affected by the lack of a bridge across the stream.
