Tura, June 25: West Garo Hills Police busted a gang of criminals, which included former militants belonging to the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), after the gang was involved in the kidnapping of a pickup driver on Tuesday.
Police informed that a total of 7 accused, mostly from the GNLA have been arrested.
According to police reports, the gang members had abducted the driver cum owner of a Mahindra Pickup vehicle from the village of Romba Adingre under WGH district on June 23.
The victim was reportedly returning from the district of EGH. He was apparently released after paying ransom the next day on June 24.
The operation to nab the gang was supervised by the superintendent of police with the team comprising the CI – Sadar PS, Tura OC, the incharge of the Chandmari Beat House, incharge of Rongram OP and staff led by the DSP (Headquarter).
“Our sources revealed that the victim was released on the evening of Jun 24 after the payment of ransom. CI operations were intensified to nab the accused persons by the same team and the dedication paid off leading to the arrest of the 7 member gang,” said SP, WGH, Dr MGR Kumar.
The arrest of the criminals led to the recovery of a carbine, 3 7.6mm Chinese make pistols, 4 magazines, 2 live grenades, live ammunition, 2 mobile phones along with ransom money ₹3,26,500/ that had been received by the armed gang.
“We are thankful to two good Samaritans from Donsimgre Rombagre, who informed us of the incident. The case is being investigated and the accused have been forwarded to Court. A case has been registered at the Tura PS,” added the SP.
The arrested accused have been identified as Probitdro A Sangma (35) of Rombagre, Dipit Ch Marak (30) of Najing Bazaar, Tura, Pillington Ch Marak (@Rakcheng of Chiading in EGH), Dunia K Sangma (30 years of Upper Babupara in Tura, Prewin R Sangma (@Walnang, 35 years of Chokpot, SGH) Rakseng Ch Marak (Geloram, 33 years of Rongsak under Williamnagar PS in EGH) and Bandi Ch Sangma from Asibra under Tura).
Interestingly, most of the arrested gang members are former surrendered militants from the GNLA.
