Shillong, Aug 25: The Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association on Tuesday, stated that as they have received no concrete response from the Government, they have decided to take the initiative to resume the livelihoods of Hawkers and Street Vendors.
The Association has started issuing ID cards, ID numbers ending with 1,3,5,7, 9 would sit on Monday, Wednesday & Friday while ID No. ending with 2,4,6,8,0 would sit on Tuesday, Thursday And Saturday.
MGSPHSVA informed that they have submitted a detailed plan to the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Health Minister, Minister of Urban Affairs and the Chief Secretary and have been writing to the government since June.
“The same way protocols have been developed for the opening of permanent shops and Malls, a protocol should be developed for the Hawkers and street vendors of Meghalaya,” the statement from the association read.
The association reiterated that the protocol has to be developed as soon as possible, before the hunger and desperation of Hawkers and Street vendors forces an unregulated opening of their livelihood.
MGSPHSVA also suggested that three days in the week should be given to Hawking and street vending while the other three days should be given to shops and malls.
They also informed that the association will be organising a training programme for its members in association with the National hawkers Federation about COVID protocols for hawking and street vending.
