Wrong to charge tax from farmers: Agri Min on Mawlong Hat incident

Shillong, Aug 5: Agriculture Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh on Wednesday expressed his disappointment over reports stating that Rs. 10 is being charged from each farmer as tax for selling their goods at the temporary market at Mawlong Hat Parking lot.

He said he is unaware of who is collecting the tax and said that it was very wrong. He added that the space was provided for farmers to “relieve them of the (financial) stress of COVID-19” and therefore taxes should not be levied.

“This is a time to help the farmers not tax them, I am very disappointed and I will take up the matter with the honourable Chief Minister,” he said.

Meanwhile, he added that to help pineapple farmers generate income, a processing scheme has being sanctioned for Ri Bhoi District, wherein products like jam, juice and more will be produced.

The agriculture minister also said that although pineapples are still being exported outside the state, the quantity of the export cannot be determined.
