13 cases of Japanese encephalitis detected in West Garo Hills

Tura, June 19: With 13 cases of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) detected in the district of West Garo Hills on Wednesday, the district administration has intensified measures to curb the disease.

The new detection of cases has raised the number of JE cases in the district to 16 with most of the cases being reported from the district headquarter of Tura. Other places which have reported detection include Garobadha, Selsella among others.

The district administration also call for an emergency meeting to be held tomorrow at the DRDA Hall in the office of the DC.

The meeting tomorrow will also be attended by the joint director of health who after an emergency meeting held today with the minister of health and family welfare, AL Hek and the secretary Pravin Bakshi in Shillong, has been asked to be present in the town of Tura to assist the administration.

“The State Nodal Officer of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme has been directed to reach Tura and monitor the situation. The availability of drugs and medicines and treatment facilities have been reviewed with the DHS MI being directed to provide all possible medical care and containment measures,” said Pravin Bakshi, the secretary of health and family welfare.

Meanwhile the deputy commissioner of WGH, Ram Singh stated that fogging would be undertaken throughout the town in an effort to control the disease.

“The state team tomorrow will also bring in medicines that are required,” confirmed the DC.

The meeting tomorrow will be attended by the Health, DSEO, police, NVBDCP, local development committees among others.

Taking note of the high cost of medicines to treat the disease – which apparently retails at about Rs 600 per dose, the Achik Youth Council (AYC) has requested the state government to bear the cost of medicines required for the diseased patients.

“There are many very poor people who have been affected and it will take a huge toll on their finances just to get themselves cured. On humanitarian grounds, we appeal to the state government to kindly help in the matter so that all are able to afford the cure,” advisor to the AYC, Dardy GC Marak.
