SHILLONG, Dec 15: Thirteen people who were trapped inside a coal mine at Ksan village close to Lytein River in East Jaintia Hills are yet to be retrieved as the water level inside the mine which is around 70 feet deep hasn’t receded.
Massive search and rescue operations are still on till Saturday without much success as rescue teams include personnel from the National Disaster Response, State Disaster Response Force and civil defence are pressed into service.
Three of the trapped miners inside are from Lumthari in East Jaintia Hills and remaining 10 are from West Garo Hills and neighbouring Assam.
Meanwhile, police arrested a person connected with the owner of the coal mine during raids conducted in the area.
Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger informed that one Jrin alias Krip Chulet who is the main accused was arrested from Norwan village.
A case No. 15(12)18 under section 188/304A/34 IPC, R/w. Section 3(2)(d) PDPP Act and Section 21(1) MM(R&D) Act was registered at Saipung police station, Nongtnger said.
The Superintendent of Police said that the owner of the coal mine, James Shukhlain is still absconding.
