SHILLONG, Apr 14: A 26-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the window of his ward at Bethany Hospital on Tuesday. Police state that his death was not related to COVID-19.
“On the 14th April of 2020 at around 9 AM information was received at Laitumkhrah Police Station from the staff of Bethany Hospital that one of their in-patient Tainingstar Jyrwa aged 26 years resident of Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills has committed suicide by jumping from the window of his ward into the stream flowing next to Bethany Hospital,” C.A Lyngwa, SP, East Khasi Hills revealed in a statement.
According to the statement, the deceased was admitted to Bethany Hospital on 30th March 2020 as he was a drug addict and needed psychiatric care.
“There is nothing to relate his suicide with recent events regarding COVID-19 and the public are advised to refrain from spreading any Misinformation /Rumours regarding the same,” Lyngwa stated.
Addressing the issue, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the person was undergoing rehabilitation as he had psychiatric problem, “In all likelihood it was a suicide,” he said.
