SHILLONG, Mar 31: People from Meghalaya recently attended the religious congregation of Tablighi Jamaat at Hazrat Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi earlier this month which has caused a huge coronavirus scare.
As per figures released by Shillong Markaz, at least seven persons had attended the congregation.
In a letter addressed to Lumdiengjri, police station, a member of the Shillong Markaz Anwar Ali informed the officer in-charge of the police station that a few people who are members of the Shillong Markaz had visited the Nizamuddin Markaz in Delhi before the lockdown was announced.
Ali said that the Shillong Markaz felt it necessary to intimate the administration so that it can take necessary steps to handle the situation.
He informed that these seven people have been stuck in Delhi since the 21-day lockdown was announced in the country.
“As the current situation of COVID-19 outbreak has occurred it is our responsibility to co-operate with the administration,” Ali said in the letter to the police.
It was also informed that the state government is taking steps by asking such persons to voluntarily visit the nearest government hospital or by calling helpline number 108.
Meanwhile, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (A), Meghalaya, Shillong has informed that 7 members of Shillong Markaz who attended the Tablighi Jamaat Meet in Nizamuddin, Delhi have not returned to Meghalaya.
Out of these 7 members, 5 are currently in Delhi and 2 are in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
He also informed that officials of Meghalaya Police had also contacted these 7 members of Shillong Markaz and they confirmed that they have not returned to Meghalaya.
The presence of these members in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh has been conveyed to the police officials of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
It may be mentioned that Meghalaya till filing of this report has not had any COVID-19 positive case.
