Shillong, July 7: NEIGRIHMS Director Dr. P Bhattacharya informed that the 8-month baby who passed away due to COVID-19 in the institute was suffering from Respiratory distress and cardiac conditions.
On Monday, the eight month old baby from Seppa, Arunachal Pradesh along with his parents and a driver arrived in Meghalaya for treatment.
The baby boy was referred to NEIGRIHMS by Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences in Naharlagun.
Dr. Bhattacharya informed that a preliminary COVID test was conducted on their arrival and the child tested positive for the virus. His parents and driver tested negative.
Immediately a confirmation test was conducted, however before the results arrived, the baby died, Dr Bhattacharya told Shillong Mail via telephonic conversation.
He added that the body was detained till the results of the confirmation test was determined to ensure safety of the parents and the driver who would be travelling back to Arunachal Pradesh.
He maintained that all protocols dealing with COVID-19 cases are undertaken by the institute.
The designated COVID ICU has been sanitised and all the staff present will go into quarantine, he stated.
He informed that staff posted in the ICU perform their duties periodically for seven days and then go into quarantine for 14 days or more, following which they are tested.
