Shillong, Oct 8: The Meghalaya Assembly Committee on Women Empowerment on Thursday summoned West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Herbert Lyngdoh to brief on the status of the Mairang rape case.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Committee member H.M Shangpliang informed that the accused is under arrest and charge sheet is almost complete.
It was informed that on September 12, an FIR was filed against the accused of sexually assaulting his own sister and minor twin nieces.
Shangpliang stated that the committee was informed that the accused himself has admitted to the crime and all evidence have been collected.
He also said that the committee has requested the SP to work with the District Commissioner to conduct awareness campaigns in West Khasi Hills, as the district reportedly has a high record of crime against women and children.
Committee Chairperson Dr. Ampareen Lyngdoh said that 42 cases of crime against women and children are pending investigation in the district and so, the committee has requested status reports of all the cases.
She also suggested the district administration to ensure counselling is imparted to victims of sexual abuse.
