SHILLONG, Sep 11: Congress MLA from East Shillong, Ampareen Lyngdoh raised the issue of casual employees in the State Sports Council.
It may be mentioned that 44 casual employees have gone on strike demanding better wages.
Replying to the Notice, Minister in-charge, Banteidor Lyngdoh informed the House, that the scheduled Annual General Meeting of the Council this year would be discussing some of the issues relating to the functioning of the Council.
The Minister informed that wages of the casual employees at present stood at Rs. 5000 per month and that of the drivers at Rs. 10,000.
“The State Sports Council is concerned about the welfare of its casual employees and has always paid their wages without any delay,” the state Sports Minister said.
Lyngdoh further assured the House that the wages of the casual employees would be brought at par with the minimum wages as notified by the Labour department.
He informed the state Assembly that the State Sports Council, Meghalaya created by the government manages its finances primarily on Grant in Aid from the government.
According to Lyngdoh the State Sports Council is however permitted to raise funds as per Article of its Constitution and measures are being explored such as raising the requisite funds various means like enhancing the rent/usage of the sports infrastructures.
