Citizenship Amendment Bill: MPYC raise slogans against NDA, burn effigies infront of BJP office in Tura

Tura, Jan 11: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC), along with 200 of its cadres staged a protest outside the BJP office at Tura in West Garo Hills, on the now contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016.

The protest demonstration that began this afternoon ended with the burning of the effigies of the prime minister, Narendra Modi and BJP president, Amit Shah in front of the BJP office. The protest was led by MPYC president, Richard Marak along with senior Congress leaders and workers.

Terming the Bill as ‘communally motivated humanitarianism’ the MPYC called it as an incentive for further migration into the North East.

“The BJP’s hypocrisy and dangerous politics is brought to the fore when one considers the provisions of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, the Assam Accord, and the NRC. The goals of NRC and the Bill are mutually exclusive, but this hasn’t stopped BJP from taking a contradictory stand. The present updating of the NRC is borne out of the provisions of the Assam Accord and the insertion of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, however, negates both the Assam Accord and Section 6A, and thus makes redundant the entire exercise of updating the NRC,” said Marak.

The MPYC termed the Bill as nothing more than vote bank politics and sought the ouster of the party from the NE.

“Unless we have a BJP free North East, BJP will finish us. Now is the right time, if you think about doing so in the future, it will be too late,” he added.

The MPYC president further hit out at the Meghalaya CM, Conrad Sangma calling him voiceless against his political masters.

“All his press releases about withdrawing from NEDA and association with the BJP are nothing but empty threats. It is all talk and no action. We will see him prove that he is spineless against his political masters, the BJP. Far from development the government is being fined. It just ‘jumla’ after ‘jumla’ just like his boss,” added the MPYC president.
