CM inaugurates Solid Waste Management Plant at Tura

Tura, December 16: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the Solid Waste Management Plant at Rongkhon Songgital, Tura in the presence of Minister Urban Affairs, etc, Government of Meghalaya, Hamletson Dohling, Advisor to the Chief Minister and MLA North Tura, Thomas A Sangma, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Ram Singh, Co-Chairman State Planning Board, Billykid A Sangma, Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, Dr. M G R Kumar, District Urban Planner, P N Sangma, District Officials, Senior Citizens and people of the area.

Speaking on the occasion, Conrad Sangma congratulated the Urban Affairs Minister and the department for the successful implementation of the project in the district adding that the same Plant will be inaugurated very soon at other districts also. Citing various complaints have been received from the residents of Rongkhon Songgital area earlier and having personally seen the spills of garbage strewn everywhere, he said that commissioning of this Plant is necessary in order to ensure sustainable waste management in the region.

While referring to the well planned garbage disposal system and management in other countries, he said that urbanization is increasing rapidly here, but the importance of proper waste disposal is yet to be realized by the people. Further, he insisted on the concerned department that the Waste Management Plant remains operational and not to discontinue after inauguration.

Emphasizing on the importance of garbage management system, he said that segregation of waste and home composting at the household level is important and that people should segregate bio-degradable and non bio-degradable waste at their homes for better disposal. He then urged all the citizens to ensure responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and make the town garbage free in the days to come.

Director, Urban Affairs, Meghalaya Shillong, E Kharmalki, in his keynote address informed the gathering about the importance of the disposal of waste in the region and urged everyone to practice segregation of waste at the household level in order to facilitate the process of recycling. He also informed that the Solid Waste Disposal Management and Facility had been implemented under Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium towns by the Government of India at the project cost of about 8 Crores.

Minister, Urban Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, Hamletson Dohling, Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Ram Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Tura Municipal Board, S B Marak were amongst others who spoke on the occasion.
