CM to make aerial survey of flood affected areas in West Garo Hills

TURA, Jul 13: Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma will on Sunday make an aerial survey of the flood affected areas of the plain belt of West Garo Hills.

Conrad is expected to be accompanied by MLAs of Phulbari, SG Esmatur Mominin and Dr Azad Zaman of Rajabala.

On Saturday, the duo met the Chief Minister to apprise him of the current situation on the ground.

West Garo Hills, deputy commissioner Ram Singh who visited the flood affected areas on Friday stated that the villages of Charbatapara, Bangalkhata and Haribhanga have been the worst affected.

Meanwhile, Rajabala legislator, Dr Zaman in a letter to the Chief Minister, while urging him to take stock of the situation also urged that flood situation may be declared.

The Rajabala legislator also said that majority of villages are submerged under water damaging the agriculture produce.

He informed that seedling in nursery bed and jute crops have submerged under water even as he stated that the situation is “grim”.

An NGO based in Chibinang said that expressed concern that despite the situation turning from bad to worse no relief has been coming.

“Everyone that has been affected has been clamouring for food and water,” Ishraful Hoque of the ACHDO said.

Meanwhile the All Meghalaya Minority Students’ Union (AMMSU) has also urged authorities to provided relief for the flood affected even as he said that people are leaving their homes for safer places.

“We request the administration to quickly help with relief materials as well as camps for them,” AMMSU president, Nur Islam said.

Islam also said that as of now the biggest problem is lack of drinking water even as he informed that all the tube wells providing potable water has submerged under flood waters.
